Deck Building Guide
Decking Material Comparison:
- Pressure-treated: Most affordable, requires sealing, 10-15 year lifespan
- Cedar/Redwood: Natural beauty, naturally rot-resistant, 15-20 years
- Composite: Low maintenance, won't rot or splinter, 25+ years
- PVC: Waterproof, no organic material, most expensive
Joist Spacing Guidelines:
- 12" OC: Required for composite decking and diagonal patterns
- 16" OC: Standard for most wood decking
- 24" OC: Only for 2x6 or thicker solid wood
Permit Requirements:
- Most decks over 200 sq ft or 30" above grade require permits
- Attached decks usually need permits regardless of size
- Check local building codes before starting
