Drywall Installation Guide
Choosing the Right Thickness:
- 1/4": Covering existing walls, curved surfaces
- 3/8": Ceiling repairs, double-layer applications
- 1/2": Standard walls and ceilings (most common)
- 5/8": Fire-rated walls, soundproofing, high ceilings
Sheet Size Tips:
- Longer sheets mean fewer seams to tape
- 4x8 sheets are easier to handle alone
- 4x12 sheets are standard for pros
- Hang sheets horizontally on walls for strength
Installation Best Practices:
- Start with ceilings, then walls
- Stagger seams between rows
- Use screws every 12" on ceilings, 16" on walls
- Keep screws 3/8" from edges
- Apply 3 coats of mud, sanding between each
