Standard tipping at restaurants in the US is 15-20% of the pre-tax bill. For excellent service, 20-25% is common. For poor service, 10-15% may be appropriate, but consider speaking with management about issues before reducing the tip significantly.

Traditionally, tips are calculated on the pre-tax amount. However, many people tip on the total bill including tax for convenience. The difference is usually small - tipping on post-tax amounts is slightly more generous to your server.

For food delivery, 15-20% is standard, with a minimum of $3-5 for small orders. Consider tipping more for large orders, bad weather, long distances, or difficult delivery locations like apartments without elevators.

Tipping on takeout is optional but increasingly appreciated, especially since the pandemic. 10-15% is a nice gesture for counter service or pickup orders. Some argue no tip is needed since there's no table service involved.

For different meal costs, each person should tip based on their individual order total. For shared items, divide evenly. Our calculator splits total evenly, but for complex splits, calculate each person's subtotal and apply the tip percentage individually.
